General Description

The Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing, evergreen, deciduous medium-sized tree. It is a perennial plant that is propagated by direct seed planting, seedling transplanting and mature stem cuttings. It is classified as a vegetable that also serves as a medicinal plant. It mainly grows in semi-arid, tropical, and subtropical regions. However, the drought resistance properties of the plant make it more suitable for drier regions. It is found both in the wild and cultivated throughout the plains and thrives best in tropical climates. The tree is abundant near sandy beds of rivers and streams. The roots are susceptible to water-logging and tend to rot in such conditions.

Additionally, it can tolerate a wide range of soil types, with the optimum being well-drained sandy or loamy soil with a pH range of 5-9.

The production and management of M. oleifera is easy due to its fast growth, low demand for soil nutrients and water. After being planted, especially in later stages, it has a high capacity to resprout after harvesting, making it perform better under marginal conditions with ample nutritional quality.

Flowers and Fruiting of Moringa is throughout the year, mostly from January to June.
